Hot Yoga

From time to time I like to try a new form of exercise – this month it’s Bikram Yoga.

I knew it was going to be hot, and when they gave me a 2 litre bottle of water on arrival I should have known I was going to sweat – a lot!  The heat is the sort of heat that if you were sitting on a beach on holiday would drive you straight into the pool.  But Bikram involves doing 90 minutes of yoga in that temperature.

My first session was all a bit overwhelming – the heat, the poses I’d not done before, the method of breathing – but it was also strangely satisfying.  And the class wasn’t in the least bit intimidating – people of all ages, sizes and levels of ability just doing their best.

And so I went back for a second session, which was a different experience, as I knew what to expect.  The heat didn’t feel so overpowering, the poses felt more familiar, and I could relax and enjoy the session.

After both sessions I drank lots and lots of water, and I felt strangely hungry too.  But I also had a very relaxed and satisfied feeling which lasted for the rest of the day.

So I’m going back again tomorrow – might even invest in my own yoga mat.
